"We hired MNBE to build our ADU in Bellevue, and the entire experience was amazing. They handled everything from foundations and framing to kitchen, siding, windows and HVAC."
Can an ADU have its own address?
It depends on the city. Washington's ADU law leaves addressing to each city, and the address is set during the building permit. Answered by MNBE founder Aharon Ben Elisha. Checked October 28, 2026.
The Short Answer
It depends on the city.
In Seattle, yes: since October 2021, SDCI gives each detached ADU its own regular address and building ID. In Redmond, an ADU uses the house address with a unit number. Elsewhere, the city sets it with the building permit.
For a new Seattle DADU, SDCI creates the address record as part of the permit process, and the address is assigned during review. Other cities have their own addressing steps, which we handle with the permit.
An attached ADU in Seattle works differently: a ground-floor unit with its own street-facing door gets an address, and an upper-floor unit gets a unit number that the owner sets up with the post office.
City by City
ADU addressing, city by city.
How each city handles the address of a new ADU.
| Where | How an ADU is addressed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle | A detached ADU gets its own regular address and building ID from SDCI during the permit. An attached ADU with a ground-floor street door gets an address; an upper-floor unit gets a unit number. | SDCI Tip 130 |
| Redmond | The house address plus a numerical unit designator. Letters and ½ aren't used. | Redmond addressing standard |
| Bellevue | Addresses for new units are assigned from an addressing site plan submitted with the permit. | Addressing site plan |
| Kirkland | No published ADU addressing policy. We confirm the address with the city during the permit. | City permit |

No. An address is for mail, deliveries and emergency response. Selling an ADU on its own takes a separate legal process, usually a condominium.
During the building permit. In Seattle, the DADU's address record opens when SDCI takes in the permit application.
If it's on the ground floor with its own street-facing door, yes. An upper-floor unit gets a unit number instead, which the owner sets up with the post office.
