The Story

A second life for an outbuilding.

The owners had a Redmond property with a small standalone structure that had been sitting unused for years. It might have been the original primary dwelling on the lot a hundred years ago. By the time we got there, it was just standing.

The economics of building a brand new DADU from scratch were strong, but the bones of the existing structure were worth preserving. We proposed a different path: keep the foundation footprint and the original framing where structurally sound, gut everything else, and rebuild it as a code compliant modern DADU under HB 1337.

We took the whole thing down to the studs. New siding, roof, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, insulation, floors, and finishes. The only thing left was the original bones. The result reads as a fresh build but draws from the existing structure's character and lot positioning.

Aharon supervised the project from foundation reinforcement through final inspection. The DADU is now generating rental income for the owners.

The Build · Chronological

Eleven stages, three months start to finish.

From the early frame to the finished kitchen, bath, and laundry. Every photo from the actual job site, taken by Aharon and his crew during the work.

Stage 01
Early framing
Open wall framing through the front of the structure, OSB sheathing piled in the yard, a crew member working at the front opening under bright sky.
Stage 02
Sheathing + roof complete
Full OSB exterior shell with the new shingled roof, doors and windows roughed in, insulation pallets staged on the lawn. Weather tight envelope reached.
Stage 03
Plumbing rough-in
Interior plumbing rough-in: PEX manifold with red and blue water lines mounted between the studs, floor joists exposed, mechanicals run from below the new floor.
Stage 04
Exterior cladding underway
House wrap and partial siding install. Scaffold staging on the side wall, crew finishing the porch framing in the foreground.
Stage 05
Drywall hung
Two finishers walking the rooms over paper protected subfloor, taped seams visible, daylight pouring through the new windows.
Stage 06
Cabinet drop
Drywall finished, first base cabinet boxes staged in the kitchen. Aharon checking a measurement, tools on the floor.
Stage 07
Cabinet install
Full perimeter and island cabinetry set in place without countertops yet. Ladder mid-room, painter blocking visible.

Interior reveal
Hallway with crisp white walls, recessed cans, a sconce, and light wood floor leading toward the kitchen.
Stage 09
Finished laundry
Deep navy grey shaker cabinetry, white quartz, stainless washer and dryer in place, matte black faucet. Utility room final.
Stage 10
Spa bath reveal
Freestanding soaking tub inside the double walk-in shower, marble look walls, dual rain heads and matte black fixtures over charcoal hex tile.
Stage 11
Finished kitchen
Quartz counters with the full slab backsplash, matte black sink and faucet at the window, stainless suite in place. Kitchen complete.
